Developing Trusting and Positive Relationships with Students with the Help of Turnitin

As a high school English teacher at Caldwell High School, Andrea Arnold has a uniquely profound understanding of the value of originality in writing. She strives to help her students grow and develop their writing skills by weaving these values into the fabric of her classroom culture.

“We take [plagiarism] very seriously, but we are also of that mindset that our kids are learning and growing, and we want successful students outside of Caldwell High School. We want them to go on to college, and be successful, and if we punish them instead of guiding them, then they are not going to be motivated to try again, or to change what they do.”

Several years ago, Andrea was facing a plagiarism epidemic. Since implementing Turnitin, Andrea strongly feels that Feedback Studio has helped her combat the issue of plagiarism while maintaining a trusting and positive relationship with her students. She uses Turnitin as a teaching tool to help students identify areas of weakness so that they can work on them and develop themselves as strong writers.

Because Andrea so deeply values feedback throughout the writing process, she has been able to leverage Turnitin as a teaching tool and cut teacher’s grading time down by 30% with Feedback Studio, vastly improving the turnaround time for student submissions. By encouraging students to take ownership of their own learning, Andrea feels that Turnitin has enabled her to improve her communication with students and support their growth in writing with actionable, meaningful feedback.
