Where student data is stored matters now more than ever. Students, educators, and institutions all expect transparency and accountability in how sensitive data is managed and where it resides.
To help institutions meet evolving requirements around data storage location, Turnitin is introducing regional data storage for Turnitin Feedback Studio in the EU and APAC - giving customers greater choice and control over where their data is stored. This marks another step in our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of institutions around the world.
What you need to know
- Student and assignment data can now be stored within the EU or APAC region; this includes a dedicated Frankfurt-based data center.
- Regional data storage is initially available to new customers using Turnitin Feedback Studio via LTI 1.3 integration. Later in the year, those logging in via Turnitin.com or TurnitinUK.com will also benefit from the update.
- This update helps institutions reinforce trust in their commitment to where student data is stored.
How is data storage changing in Turnitin Feedback Studio?
Regional data storage in the EU and APAC is now available for new Turnitin Feedback Studio customers.
In countries like the UK and Germany, "Where is my data?" has become one of the most critical questions in the procurement process. This move isn't just about checking a box; it’s about simplifying how your institution stores sensitive student data. By hosting data locally, we help you:
- Build trust: Give students and staff confidence about local data storage standards.
- Satisfy requirements: Meet internal, institutional, or government mandates regarding data storage.
- Simplify vendor reviews: Provide clearer control over where data is stored, making security assessments and stakeholder approvals more straightforward.
- Speed up procurement: Remove data storage hurdles to enable faster access to Turnitin Feedback Studio.
What type of data is stored in region?
All data hosted within the Turnitin Feedback Studio application is stored exclusively within its designated region. This includes student submissions (original files and Similarity Reports), user and class information, and all associated account metadata (such as submission timestamps and file details).
By storing all application data within your region, we provide a more transparent storage model for your institution.
When will regional data storage in Turnitin Feedback Studio be available?
We are rolling this update out in two specific phases for new customers:
- Phase 1 (April 29, 2026): For new customers accessing Turnitin Feedback Studio via an LMS (like Canvas or Moodle) using an LTI 1.3 integration.
- Phase 2 (Mid-to-late 2026): For new customers accessing Turnitin Feedback directly via Turnitin.com or TurnitinUK.com.
Can existing Turnitin Feedback Studio customers switch to regional data storage?
A common question we’ve heard is: "Can I switch my current Turnitin Feedback Studio account to regional data storage?"
Current Turnitin Feedback Studio accounts are not eligible to convert to regional storage as the current global configuration cannot support regional data sovereignty standards.
Therefore, to take advantage of regional data storage, existing customers:
- Must set up a brand-new Turnitin Feedback Studio account.
- Must access Turnitin Feedback Studio via the New Standard, Turnitin Clarity, or Paper to Digital assignment type in LTI 1.3
Please note: Historical data from a pre-existing Turnitin Feedback Studio account will remain in the global environment and cannot be migrated.
What should you do next?
If you’re new to Turnitin: Contact our sales team to learn more about regional data storage.
If you’re an existing customer: Reach out to your account manager to discuss if a new regional account is the right move for your institution.
We’re here to help you navigate this transition.
