Dr. Arti Chandani serves as the Chair of the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow, one of the highest academic qualifications in the field. She oversees the progress of doctoral scholars across specializations such as marketing, finance, HR, organizational behavior, and Information Systems. Dr. Arti ensures that each scholar's journey—from coursework to research and publication to programme completion—is smooth, timely, and aligned with academic standards and institutional guidelines.
Jaipuria Institute of Management is stringent in its adherence to the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, the apex body in India for academic governance, as well as the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). As Dr. Arti explains, “academic integrity is very important and we practice it sincerely”, with zero tolerance for plagiarism and comprehensive training to imbue scholars and students with the highest level of integrity in their coursework and research submissions.
From dissertation checks to coursework integrity at every level
A Turnitin customer since 2016, Jaipuria Institute of Management, uses Turnitin Feedback Studio with Originality in their Fellow Program of Management and throughout their Post Graduate program to uphold integrity in assignments, projects, research work, and FPM coursework. Seamlessly integrated within their Moodle LMS, the institution relies on the similarity checking capabilities and, more recently, Turnitin’s AI writing detection tool.
Dr. Arti Chandani, herself a long-term advocate of Turnitin since 2011, explains that educators' experience and instinct often raise potential academic misconduct, but before Turnitin, they lacked consistent and reliable means to validate these concerns and provide students with clear evidence of writing missteps.
One motivating factor for Jaipuria Institute of Management in choosing Turnitin is its widespread use and trust among academics and publishers. When faculty submit their research papers, they want to be confident that the same rigorous checks have been done, without risking inconsistencies from using other tools or methods that might not meet the same standards.
FPM scholars under Dr. Arti’s supervision are instructed to run Turnitin checks early in the research process, and many proactively request these checks themselves. This helps them identify and resolve issues before submission, avoiding rejections and saving valuable time. As Dr. Arti notes, “It gives you a lot of confidence and peace of mind, as a researcher.”
Beyond research, the Turnitin workflow also plays a key role in everyday coursework. Dr Arti credits the tools with helping to foster a culture of academic integrity at Jaipuria by raising awareness of integrity standards and creating a shared expectation that all work will be checked. This transparency helps students stay accountable and understand the value of original work. Not limited to student compliance, she describes the formative impact: “We found that the quality of student work was increasing because it required them to read, understand, and express ideas in their own words—rather than simply copying and pasting.”
Equally beneficial for educators is the efficiency brought to the integrity-checking process. The speed of Turnitin’s automated integrity checks far surpasses what’s possible with manual review alone. In terms of a quantifiable impact, Dr Arti shares: “If I had to check manually, it might take up to 2 days to detect integrity issues in one assignment, whereas Turnitin helps me reach the answer in just a couple of minutes.”
This efficiency means more time can be spent on meaningful student engagement, research, and teaching rather than administrative labour. “I would say Turnitin has become a necessity for all of my work, and faculty are very happy to be using the tools. I definitely recommend it”, remarks Dr. Arti.
Pioneering AI practice with AI writing detection
Jaipuria Institute of Management was an early adopter of Turnitin’s AI writing detection tool upon its release in 2023, which arrived at a critical moment for Jaipuria and its AI policy committee. Anticipating generative AI’s impact on student learning and writing, the institution was actively developing its policies on AI and seeking ways to uphold them.
Impressed by Turnitin’s quick action on a solution for identifying AI-generated text in student work—and given the success of the similarity checking workflow—its adoption was a natural step for the institute. They acknowledge the role of Turnitin's AI writing detection capabilities in supporting them to align their AI policy with AI practice, and transition quickly once ChatGPT emerged.
Rather than a punitive measure, the tool helps identify where and when AI writing occurs in student work, guiding responsible and transparent use of AI. “Our AI use policies are concerned with how AI can be used ethically and how it can help to generate ideas rather than doing your work for you; an aid rather than something you completely depend on. Turnitin’s AI writing detection helps us uphold this principle”, says Dr. Arti Chandani.
