Teaching the Art and Skill of Writing with Formative, Immediate Feedback

The teachers at Torrens Valley Christian School aren’t just teaching writing: they want to know what their students are really thinking and their unique opinion on an important topic. Susan Koefer, a German teacher for Years 7 and 8, as well as an Ancient and Modern History teacher for Years 10 - 12, pushes her students to think critically about global topics, and to discuss and write about their perspectives in class.

“What we are really looking for in education is developing that individual student and bringing the best out in their writing and from them.”

Susan emphasizes to her students that there are many crucial steps in the writing process and that “you can’t just sit down and write something and then just hand it in and it’s all done.” With the help of Turnitin, she teaches the art and skill of writing by offering formative, immediate feedback, every step of the way.

Her students evaluate and reflect on their own work, brainstorming ways they can make it better. She hopes that by using Turnitin in classroom discussions and in her teaching, her students’ confidence will grow, so that they know, not only how to reference, but that their own writing is better than any “copy and paste” option found online.
