Pushpamala Perera is the librarian at the premiere Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, where they utilize Turnitin to encourage an environment of academic integrity. At her institution, they strive to have a positive influence on not only their students, but on students around the country.
“We don’t just want a policy, we really want to build up a culture here. It’s not really recognised that we have a culture like this because there are many other private higher education institutions in which the students have much more freedom to copy from the internet and no one to track it, point it out, and correct them. However, we want a to develop a culture and ask that they are up front with us.”
SLIIT’s goal is to maintain a quality academic environment and enhance the educational culture, and Pushpamala believes that they would be the ideal role model in their country to show how to effectively use Turnitin’s technology.
“Turnitin has helped to develop a trustworthy academic culture in the institution and the library is the focal point of handling this tool."
As one of the leaders of the library program, Pushpamala has had the opportunity to observe the positive impacts of Turnitin up close. She is firm believer in shaping the culture of her institution, training and educating students and faculty regarding plagiarism. She has seen how the efforts put forth by her and her colleagues have benefited the students of her institution in ways that will extend beyond their time in education.
