How One School’s Adoption of Turnitin Transformed a Community’s Concept of Originality

Shifting Paradigms

Dr. Maritza Alvarez Feliz, the Literature and Social Studies Department Head at St. Michael's School in the Dominican Republic, strongly believes that feedback is one of the most invaluable tools that teachers can offer their students. She uses Turnitin as a way to help students develop their writing skills, as well as a way to teach them the importance of creativity and originality.

“The most important thing is giving feedback to students because that’s the way they grow and become better writers, better observers and then consequently, they are able to reflect upon their own writing to improve. Feedback is the most important part of the learning process, especially when essay writing is involved.”

Maritza values the ability of education to offer student mobility and builds confidence in her students by teaching them how to write clearly and cite in APA format, so they can acquire the potential to find academic success in the Dominican Republic and beyond. She sees the impact of Turnitin from a big picture perspective and believes it has the power to shift the way in which our education system thinks about academic integrity, across the globe.

“... it’s something that’s going to mark an impact on education worldwide, in countries such as ours, where credibility and originality are not widely respected as they should be… There’s been a paradigm shift to the school, to the institution and the community as a whole regarding the concept of originality and giving due credit to the source it originates from.”
